Drop Everything and READ!

As a homeschool parent of 4 kids, I understand that sometimes motivations wane during the colder months, and the struggle becomes real. It is often like the end of the honeymoon phase in marriage. At SAS, we wanted to take a few minutes to let you know about a new initiative that we are starting to help encourage reading. Our hope is that this helps you, the parent, with the lack of motivation around reading from your students. Also, we recently purchased some software for parents to use for reading support at home. For those of you who do not know, SAS has a lending library available to families, and our wonderful librarian, Jill Ellingson, has just redone the catalog so you can see what we have to offer.

Winter Reading Initiative

During the SAS school day, we are going to institute DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) for the last 15 minutes of lunch recess. Our hope is to create a culture around reading. You can help us in this effort by making sure your child has a paper/hardback book in their backpack for DEAR time.

Needs Request Now Open – Holiday Care Package Program

As we enter the holiday season, we recognize that some families may be facing difficult times. The Holiday Care Package Program is back to support current JA & Summit families and staff with gifts, essential needs, and more. While we can’t guarantee every request will be fulfilled, we’ll do our best to help as many families as possible.

If your family is experiencing hardship, please complete the Needs Request Form LINKED ON THE COMMUNITY CARES PAGE by Friday, November 14.

All personal information is confidential and reviewed only by Tiffany Flores (Community Engagement Specialist) for coordination purposes. Tiffany will follow up directly once your form has been reviewed. Questions? Contact Tiffany Flores for assistance.

(Want to donate? The list of needed donations will be shared on November 17, with collections running through December 8 — stay tuned for details on how to give!)

School of Mines Field Trip:

November 14th, 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM

Join us at the Colorado School of Mines Museum as we try and SPOT THE FAKE. This is a Hands-on Activity: Try your hand at being a museum Curator in “Spot the Fake!” Students will inspect a set of “donated” specimens using basic tools and be charged with finding and rejecting the fakes. Tune your observation skills and walk on the skeptical side. You’ll be surprised by fake-looking natural specimens and natural-looking phonies. $10 per student (one free adult chaperone).

All are welcome; however, this activity is geared towards kids in grades 4 and up.
